The Men’s Club are inviting the public to hear Dr. Taylor again tonight at the Episcopal Church, at 8 o’clock. . . Lent begins Wed nesday with Ash Wednesday serv ices at 8 a. m. and 10:30 a. m. at the Episcopal Church and 5 p. m. with union services at the Congregational Church. ; The Senate has confirmed the ^nation of Harry McDonald head of R. F. C. His smiling picture in today’s papers reminds us very much of his charming sister, Mrs. Isabel Knoll, who was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Bennett recently. . . Spartanburg Herald today has picture of James Wofford of Landrum Rt. 2 being awarded Bronze' Star Medal for bravery in Korea. . . Mrs. Chas. C. Reakirt is selling tickets for the Spartanburg Junior Follies of March 5. . . So many local people are tops in so many things that nearly every day brings something interesting. Feb. 23 Saturday Evening Post Ccvtimied on Back Page_ POLK NATIVE DIES OF GUN WOUND Fred A. Owens, 37, of Travelers Rest, Route 3, was fatally wound ed Monday afternoon when he was shot in the abdomen with a 12-gauge shotgun, the office of sheriff R. H. Bearden said. A man listed as Leroy Turner of Travelers Rest Route 3 was arrested for investigation in con nection with the shooting. Chief Deputy Pralo Wood said that Turner turned over a knife to officers, saying Owens had the knife. Owens, a native of Polk County, N. C., was a resident of the Tiger ville community and was a veter an of World War II. Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Dovie Banks Owens; a daughter, Judy; four sons, Ted, Frankie, Clifton and Donald Lee, all of Travelers Rest Route 3; his father, Andrew Owens, and his step-mother, Mrs. Annie Owens, both of Brevard, N. C. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Wood Mortuary of Greer. Spartanburg Herald. Maj. and Mrs. A. R. Herron have returned to Tryon from a trip to California and Hawaii. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Ford have as guests their daughter and family. Dr. and Mrs. Maurice Bus kirk and children, Peggy and Kar en, of Midland, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Sut phin are visiting Mrs. Sutphin’s sister, Mrs. J. Frank Richardson at her home on Lake Lanier, hav ing Stopped over enroute from Fla. to their home in Rumbley, Md.
